Gala Dinner, August 2011

Event:             Gala Dinner
Date:               15 August 2011
Venue:            Sydney Aquatic Centre, Homebush
Pax:                380

Brief:
There were 380 guests, the entertainment had been booked; DJ, five piece brass section, a dozen divers and two Olympic swimming pools. The great big grey cavernous space needed to look great. The client wanted a show…and a big one!

Outcome:
With more than 80 lighting fixtures and 160 metres of truss, we flooded the ceiling, washed the pools and scrubbed the dancefloor with colour and movement, while still creating a warm and intimate dining space. We used the latest in LED moving fixture technology to flood the diving boards, follow spots for the entertainment and happy tubes for the DJ. We even shot lights across the pool through portholes usually reserved only for TV cameras.

The audio system had to be distributed too. It was required to spread to the pre-function area (80 metres away), serve its purpose for the speeches, work for the entertainment (30 metres in the opposite direction) and have an isolated system for the DJ.

For the event opener, we effectively combined all the entertainment elements. In their tuxes, the brass section blasted an Olympic fanfare from high up on the diving boards. As soon as they finished, we immediately hit play on an eight minute music composition synchronised with 12 very enthusiastic divers ranging in age from 7 to 15. The accompanying music and light show was like nothing they’d ever heard, seen or been part of. They audience loved it too!

The night continued with dinner, but the music and light show kicked back in as soon as the formalities were over.

The team at the Aquatic Centre were great to work with and shared our enthusiasm for the project. And only one guest ended up in the pool….!
